Akron candidates' night set for August 22

Akron area lesbian and gay voters will have an opportunity to meet some of the names on the ballot for the November election in a Candidates' Night Out, organized by Stonewall Akron to be held August 22.

As many as 300 community members are expected to attend the forum as candidates from the national, state and local levels come together to discuss policy issues in an effort to demonstrate the importance and strength of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender vote.

Among the nine candidates who sent confirmations regarding the event are both Democratic 14th District Representative Thomas C. Sawyer and Republican challenger Joyce George.

"Historically, one candidate is pro-gay on

issues while the other is not," said Jerry Lishak of Stonewall Akron. "It is exciting that to see both candidates interested in speaking to us."

Stonewall is also publishing a Gay Community Voters Guide, based on 125 surveys sent to office seekers asking information on lesbian and gay issues. The guide will be made available in October.

The Candidate's Night Out begins at 7 pm with an informal mixer with cocktails, followed by the forum at 8 pm. The forum is free and open to the public.

All events will take place at the University of Akron Martin Center, 105 Fir Hill. For more information, contact Stonewall at 330-453-2609.

Party highlights Columbus Couples Together re-start

Columbus Couples Together has re-formed and recently had their first get-together at a couple's home in Westerville. The event was attended by over twenty people, a caricature artist was on hand, plenty of food, beverage, story-telling and a commitment by at least three couples to sponsor future events at their homes.

The group has been in existence for overten years, but went into a temporary hiatus approximately two years ago. The initial function to restart the group was a huge success and will definitely get the momentum going to establish a successful, vital couples group in Columbus.

The current chair couple, Brad Shore and Mel Marshall, are committed to seeing the group grow. When asked about the reformation, Brad said, "Couples groups are sorely needed in most cities. As more gay people settle in permanent long-term relationships it is important to provide an option for these people. There is a definite need in the Columbus community. As an alternative to the bar scene it's definitely a constructive, positive way to meet and socialize with other couples."

The next event will be held in late August. For more information about Columbus Couples Together, please call Brad Shore at 614-895-8044.
